Monday, December 12th

So I decided to take my service learning class at Dellos because Miss Lindsy was teaching some awesome choreography to "Work Out" by J. Cole and I wanted to learn it. Kaitlyn came along with me and this is pretty much what went down. Enjoy :)

Blog 10: Self Reflection

1. So far, I think my overall work in the project is equal to that of a CR. I know I haven't necessarily been on top of my assignments and almost all of my work has been late. I've lagged on both my interviews and was in danger of succumbing to the NC rules.

2. One thing I think I've done well on is keeping up with my independent component because my independent component is my dance elective and since the beginning of the year, I've been teaching choreography non stop.

3. I need to really improve on getting my science fair stuff in order because I still don't know what I'm even going to do for my experiment. Another thing is turning assignments in on time and doing things ahead of time to avoid complications like people not calling you back because this specific issue has been my main downfall throughout this senior project.

Got My Service Learning

Even though the second interview for your service learning person was due forever ago, I barely got it done today.

I went to Dellos Dance & Performing Arts Studio in Chino and I was very much welcomed; reminded me of the happy atmosphere my old dance studio had.

I went in there and I just kind of asked the lady at the front which teachers taught older girls (14-18) or taught intermediate level dancers, and she told me that Ms. Lindsy taught hip hop (which was perfect for me), so I was sold on her.

When I met her, she was really, really nice. As she was filling out her information on the verification form, she asked me why I chose to do dance choreography as my senior topic and I gave her a little, brief story of my dance background, which was ultimately why I chose the topic in the first place. But anyways, I sincerely feel that I'm going to have a great time doing service learning with her.
She seems really nice and welcoming, and I hope she won't get sick of me :P

But if anyone that actually stalks through my blog or everyone's blog for that matter, here's the link to Dellos' website if you're curious :) http://www.dellosdance.com/

What I've Learned So Far

1. For the most part, I already knew everything in my research so far, but I was reminded about how you have to keep going over things in choreography depending on the dancers. Teaching the dance team "Thriller" was a bit of a reminder for me of how there will always be people at different dance levels, ranging from memory to actually being able to do the moves to the according counts. I hadn't taught anything to anyone since the end of the last school year and I got used to my old dance girls getting the choreography and counts a lot faster and a lot easier. Getting new girls this year/ semester was a reminder of how a choreographer has to keep reviewing things and executing things in different ways, due to the fact that things click differently in people's heads in different ways.

3. The source that helped me with this was my first interview with my old dance teacher, Rae-Ann Stinson. She said that one of the hardest parts of being a choreographer is having to go back and remind the dancers of things in the routine so that they get it right, in a way that they'll understand. For example, this video documented the very last rehearsal before the actual performance and there were still things that needed to be fixed. I actually danced out the correct ways of the parts that needed to be done so that the dancers understood. Dance is a very visual form of art, and you can't always verbalize what you're talking about when it comes to choreography.

Independent Component 1 Plan Approval

1. I'm planning for my independent component to be correlated with my dance elective. As one of the captains of I-Poly's dance team, it's required for me to make up and teach dance choreography to the dance class. I'm going to keep a log of each time teach choreography, whether it's a new a routine or not, and I will record the dance elective performing this routine during practice each week.

2. I have dance elective every Tuesday and every Friday ranging from an hour to an hour and a half. I will easily complete the 30 hour requirement in less than a month. Not to mention the fact that I will hold hour long afters chool and 40 minute lunch practices.

3. My independent study relates to my EQ because my EQ has to do with ways of successfully teaching choreography to a dance class. During my independent study, I will be able to identify and discover effective ways of teaching choreography to my class.

Defining the Essential Question

1. What is most effective in teaching choreography to a dance course?

2. -effective: functioning
    -teaching: executing

3. Knowing how to communicate what you want to the dancers, demand discipline from the dancers, and being aware of the dancers' capabilities.

4. My most important source is "The Art of Choreography" article because it has answered my EQ and it describes what choreography is, what a choreographer does, and every single aspect put into making a dance routine.

Blog 4: Interview 1 & Presentation 1

1. My interview didn't really effect my presentation because my interview taught me what it takes to be a dance choreographer, and my presentation was a bio about my favorite choreographer.

2. I think when I mentioned in my presentation that Mia Michaels won Emmys for her choreography on "So You Think You Can Dance", it kind of made people realize that you can get far in life as a choreographer if you're good enough, and that it's not just some hobby and it's right up there in professions with acting and singing that get recognition.

3. The most challenging to do with the interview was actually getting someone that would actually call you back. The most challenging thing to do about my presentation was teaching something that would fit a 5 minute time frame. There were many things I could talk about regarding choreography, but I knew I would elaborate so much on that one thing and run over time, and it was hard for me to pick something I could BRIEFLY talk about.

Interview Check

I am interviewing my former hip hop dance teacher, Tiffany, because she used to be a choreographer for MC Hammer, and I think that if anyone can answer my questions with great elaboration and detail, it is her. She's been my dance teacher and choreographer and is well experienced in the field, due to her many years working as a dance instructor, choreographing for national dance competitions and celebrities.

Additional questions I plan on asking her include:

1. What was it like being a dance choreographer for MC Hammer?
2. When did you start choreographing and why?
3. What have you done since choreographing for MC Hammer and many dance groups in California?
4. What's the hardest part about being a choreographer?

Blog 1: Senior Project Topic

My topic is dance choreography because it's something I've worked with for a big portion of my life, having been in dance since I was 9 years old. Every dancer eventually grows into choreographing routines for themselves or other people and it ends up becoming a passion to most. That's exactly what has happened to me, being the captain of I-Poly's dance team.

What I hope to accomplish after studying this topic for the entire school year is to walk away a better choreographer because I do hope to one day become a dance teacher sometime in my future, and to better understand the life, philosophies, and work of actual choreographers. I also hope that as I research everything throughout the year, I can achieve my greatest potential as a choreographer for my dance team, in time for the end of the year pep rally.
